按部就班
àn bù jiù bān
Literal Meaning: “Follow the steps and proceed according to the order.” The phrase describes doing things in a systematic and orderly manner, following a set procedure or plan.
Figurative Meaning: It describes acting in a systematic, orderly, and methodical way, adhering strictly to established rules or procedures. It can have both positive and negative connotations:
- Positive: Emphasises discipline, thoroughness, and attention to detail.
- Negative: May imply rigidity, lack of creativity, or reluctance to adapt.
Usage Example: 他做事总是按部就班,从不马虎。
Hanyu PinYin: Tā zuòshì zǒngshì àn bù jiù bān, cóng bù mǎhu.
English Meaning: He always follows the steps and never cuts corners.
Bible Verse: Proverbs 21:5 (NIV): “The plans of the diligent lead to profit as surely as haste leads to poverty.”
This verse directly contrasts the patient, step-by-step approach (按部就班) with the dangers of cutting corners or rushing through important work.
Personal Reflection: Often, we do not understand the process, and we try to find shortcuts. When we take these shortcuts, we miss out on the learning. Recently, I realised that both my boys in Secondary 1, studied a full year of literature without actually reading the test book, which was Wonder by R.J. Palacio. They relied mainly on the study notes provided by their teachers.
Often, I wonder what they are missing out on when the focus is on passing exams, rather than on learning as a whole. There were so many good values taught in Wonder: Resilience, Treating People Right, True Friends.
“Father, teach us the enjoy the process of learning and not just finding every shortcut. Help us to grow and develop into men and women after your own heart.”
